Plot synopsis
The film begins with Dharampal visiting his late mother's bank vault to collect her belongings. There he finds adoption papers certifying that he was adopted in 1960 from a Muslim orphanage. Shocked by this revelation, he decides to keep it a secret from his family and friends. However, he confides in his Muslim neighbor Nawab Mehmood Nazim Ali Shah Khan Bahadur (Annu Kapoor), who agrees to help him find his biological father.
They discover that his father is Meer Shaukat Ali (Naseeruddin Shah), a devout Muslim who is in a critical condition due to old age. The imam taking care of Meer tells Dharampal that if Meer saw that his only son has been brought up as a non-Muslim, it could cause severe damage to his health. Therefore, he tells Dharampal to learn how to become a true Muslim and come back to meet Meer once he is ready.
With the help of Nawab, Dharampal begins to learn the ways of Muslim people. He changes his name to Abdullah Islamuddin Qureshi Khan Trivedi (AIQKT), grows a beard, wears a skullcap, prays five times a day, reads the Quran, eats halal food, and avoids alcohol. However, his transformation causes problems in his personal and professional life. His wife suspects him of having an affair, his son disapproves of his new look, his daughter-in-law questions his sanity, his clients cancel their orders, and his Hindu friends shun him.
Meanwhile, he also gets involved in a legal dispute with a Hindu guru named Neelanand Baba (Naseeruddin Shah in a double role), who claims that Dharampal's house belongs to him. b70169992d
